Marc Doudin, the young genius

February 19, 2011
  • How did you get in touch with music?
    >How I got in touch with music? Well finally I just wanted to play some raw metal a few years ago. I rented a bad acoustic guitar to practise and it actually got on my nerves because I’m a very impatient person. However, I just found out that it was kind of easier to get some tones out of a bass guitar a year later and it took me into the whole music thing.<
  • What would you do if there wouldn’t be music, starting with tomorrow?
    >I’d pack my bags and start to travel around the world to get some impressions of everywhere and to catch some unfiltered field recordings (that’s not music is it?).<
  • …and what if you had to produce in a different music genre? What would that be?
    >Definitely hard to answer. I bet post-rock is to be called the same genre I produce in at the moment. Well I’d say Hardcore, Experimental Indie Rock or Black Metal, maybe even Dubstep.<
  • What’s your (original) profession?
    >I took three years as a commercial trainee. After I got some insights about “economy” and politics I’m very glad that I gave that thing up. At the moment I work with drug addicts and alcoholics in a small accomodation.<
  • What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
    >Sudden waves of inspiration, my lovely girl Laura, Twin Peaks, British comedy movies and wind drones.<
  • What’s your next plan music-wise?
    >I’m working for a new album at the moment. Guitar based ambient called Klangwerk & Ambient. Be surprised.<
  • Who would you like to collaborate with the most and why?
    >That’s a difficult question to answer. But I think a session with Stars of the Lid would be good.<
  • Is there a band/music genre you can’t stand listening to?
    >Yes, there certainly are, but I’ll leave that question out.<
  • Is there some music you like – but ashamed to admit it?
    >I’m not ashamed of any music I like but I think the thing that gets close to it is probably Burzum.<
  • The beauty of silence or the chaos of noises?
    >The beauty of silence. Although I doubt that silence even exists.<
  • What’s your favourite album ever? (click on the image for larger size)
    >Gravitational Pull vs. the Desire for an Aquatic Life – Stars of the Lid<
  • …and your favourite album cover? (click on the image for larger size)
    >I’m not sure. But spontaneously Taylor Deupree‘s new album Shoals. Which is also from the sound one of my faves.<
  • If you could be a rock star, who would you be?
    >Funny question. The Undead version of Jimi Hendrix.<
  • Do you have a role model?
    >Not really. I take impressions and influences, but to say I have a role model is wrong.<
  • Who would you like to meet the most?
    >Mogwai’s bass player. I bet he’s fun and he has an interesting bass technique (the bass is still my main instrument).<
  • What are your favourite movies?
    >Withnail & I, a British comedy movie. Much fun, much intelligent, much beautiful.<
  • If you had to direct your own movie, how would it look like?
    >oh my… No clue! I would probably do something like an abstract visualisation of people’s relations and stuff. Not sure, but in a funny way.<
  • Which language would you like to speak most and why?
    >I love British English. I’m Swiss so I speak (Swiss-dialected) German. But I would like to learn how to speak Scandinavic languages.<
  • How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
    >Clumsy, impatient, contemplative, censorious and emotional.<
  • What are your vices?
    >Drinking tea as much as a smoker smokes.<
  • What is the most unusual comment anyone has ever made about you?
    >My briefs were unsexy because they’re neon coloured yellow.<
  • The best moment in your life?
    >There are a few moments which are in hard concurrence to each other.<
  • What does beauty mean to you?
    >Beauty could appear in any way. In a smile, in light, in sound, anywhere.<
  • What would you do today if the world would end tomorrow?
    >Being naked and playing an apocalyptic guitar melody, or, having sex, or getting horribly drunk with beer brewed in my hometown’s brewery (this last one was nonsense, but it’s tasty, just try it!)<
  • Which places you love the most?
    >Solothurn, Switzerland. Lysefjord, Norway. London, England and New Zealand.<
  • What’s your favourite food?
    >Anything that’s not Asian. Sorry, I don’t like Asian food.<
  • What’s your favourite flavour?
    >the taste of clean air at my place.<
  • Three things you could never get rid of?
    >My love to music & arts, tea, talking too much.<
  • Your three favourite websites?
    >Last.fm, Blogger, Google<
  • What’s your favourite picture about yourself? (click on the image for larger size)

  • What’s your most favourite picture you made? (click on the image for larger size)

Norway

  • What is the question you always would have liked to be asked but nobody ever did?
    >Who murdered JFK?!<
  • Who murdered JFK?!
    >…just to answer… Where the fuck should I know that from?<

Marc Doudin (born in 1991) is a Swiss Drone/Ambient artist from Solothurn.

2007, he began with his first tries in the field of electronic music. Works from this time appeared under the moniker of Utspring, Arctic Ocean Area Forecast or Snowscape.
Since the beginning of his works, there’s an obvious change in the musical filed. Whereas the early works of Marc Doudin move in the genre of Industrial Noise Ambient, later works rather base on classic ambient music with obvious influence of drone, completed by simple piano passages.

Nowadays, Marc Doudin is working with similar patterns like more-known artists of the genre of Ambient Post-Rock/Drone like for example Stars of the Lid, Labradford or Hammock. Instead of Beats, the Swiss uses swelling chord-structures and discreet piano-lines.

At the moment, Marc is working on his newest work, which is probably coming out by the end of this year under the album-name „Marc Doudin Plays Songs for People Who Don’t Sleep at Night“. Before the album, Marc is planning to release a Maxi Single with the name „I Can’t Sleep Tonight”. Musically, the new album takes its distence from the experimental noise corner and moves to modern classical and electronic influences. Spheric sounds meet strings and horns, surrounded by atmospheric drones. (You can check the state of his work on last.fm, where he offers his works for free streaming, each time he gets another track finished.
